Case Study: CRYOSPHERE: A Public Meltdown
Mediums: Installation, Film, Photography, Sound Design
Role: Concept Creator, Director, Editor, Set Designer
Overview:
Cryosphere: A Public Meltdown is an immersive, multi-sensory experience that invites audiences to explore the beauty, vastness, and fragility of Earth's cryosphere. The project combines documentary footage, poetic narration, and installation design to emotionally engage audiences with the realities of climate change.
Creative Process & Methodology:
Research: The project commenced with a thorough investigation of climate science, glacial geography, and the human effects of melting ice, with a particular emphasis on climate migration and intergenerational loss.
⮚ Filming: I travelled to Iceland to document real glaciers and ice caves, capturing both their majesty and fragility. I employed both drone videography and a 360-degree camera to obtain these images.
⮚ Installation Design: Using dust sheets, cool-toned lighting, and projection mapping, I recreated the sensation of being inside an ice cave. The environment was intimate, with audience members entering in small groups to enhance emotional impact.
⮚ Narrative & Sound: The project was structured in three acts and included an original voiceover that guided audiences through awe, warning, and poetic reflection.
Outcome:
The event was fully booked for most of the day and received strong feedback for its atmosphere, message, and sensory power. It succeeded in sparking emotional reactions and conversations around climate grief and future responsibility.
Takeaway:
Cryosphere deepened my understanding of how art can create emotional resonance around data-heavy issues like climate change. It also reinforced my belief in combining film, space, and voice to shift perspectives and invite introspection.
